Zoe Saldana’s Na’vi

After her star-making turn in Star Trek, one can’t help but think that, James Cameron wishes her make Zoe Saldana a bit more recognizable in his new movie, “Avatar”. (Out December 18.)

She’s an indigenous Na’Vi after all, unlike Sam Worthington’s human-placed-inside-a-Na’Vi body that looks a little like Sam Worthington. She even talks in a strange accent!

Want to see her in the next 12 months? Try “Takers” and, even better, Neil LaBute’s remake of 2007 British flick, “Death At A Funeral” that tantalizingly comes with a tweaked script from Cris Rock. Expect her involvement in Star Trek 2 to be announced as well, but in the meantime prepare for “Avatar” and the work she had to do to become a Na’vi…”It was the most physically demanding role I’ve ever done. I was training seven days a week with, Wushu, archery, horse riding, weightlifting and months of dialect-coaching so I could learn the language of the Na’vi,” she says.

She’s the blue one by the way, hanging with Worthington a lot on the planet of Pandora.

Avatar’s Pandora

In a galaxy far, far away… (Five light years from Earth, to be precise,) is the planet of Pandora, the setting of James Cameron’s “Avatar” and it’s about to become the giant battleground for an epic war between the native people of the Na’vi and the invading military forces of Earth’s Resources Development Alliance (RDA).

The humans see the Na’vi as ferocious aliens that must be destroyed to save Earth. But to the Na’vi, the humans are aliens destroying their planet and therefore have to fight back to save Pandora. “This has got a love story in it, but it’s not primarily a love story. It’s about a guy finding his place in the world, and his sense of duty.” said Cameron. “But when we got into making it, we found all these little nuanced moments between the two characters. It became a more emotional film. But ultimately, when it’s all said and done, it’s a love story.” he added.

“But I haven’t’ seen a love story like this one before.” commented Zoe Saldana.” (As so will we December 18)

“ They’re soul mates,” she said, “ but also soldiers.”

Sandra Bullock’s Blind Side

Sandra Bullock plays a feisty, real-life southern spitfire named Leigh Anne Tuohy in “The Blind Side”. (out in theaters November 20)

“I’m all about loving and giving, but I’m going to kick your ass if you do something you’re not supposed to do.” said, Tuohy.

Adapted from a book by Michael Lewis, the film recounts how Tuohy and her husband, Sean (Tim McGraw) – a wealthy white Memphis couple with two kids of their own – took in a homeless black teenager named Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron). Despite the raised eyebrows, snickering, and worse from many around them, the Tuohys wound up adopting Other as their son and helping him get into college and eventually join the NFL, where he now plays left tackle for the Baltimore Ravens.

“She did a good job,” Tuohy says. “And if she’d done a bad job, I’d have told you in a second. “I’m all about being honest.” She laughs a brassy laugh.

“And she has nice ta-tas.” she adds. “ I was elated about that.”

Meryl Says, “It’s Complicated”

Meryl Streep is getting used to being swept off her feet. Two summers ago, she frolicked on a Greek island with no fewer than three former lovers in “Mamma Mia!” Last August, an adoring husband beamed at her in “Julie & Julia.” And in next month’s movie, “It’s Complicated” (out December 25) She plays a divorcee who has a fling with her hotheaded ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) just as she’s contemplating dating her gentlemanly architect friend, (Steve Martin).

“I loved doing this movie.” she said. “It’s about the intimacy of marriage and the comfort and the mess of it. It felt like what we did was exactly right.” “My leitmotif!” the actress laughs. “I mean, am I not the luckiest woman on the face of the planet?” she said, while sipping a cappuccino. “I think it’s more to do with the fantasy of women my age and the we’re-not-done-yet feeling.”

Penelope and Sex and the City

Oscar winner Penelope Cruz has confirmed her cameo in the “Sex and the City” sequel (Due out in theaters May 28.) She said her character joins fellow celebrity drop-ins Miley Cyrus and Liza Minnelli.

“I don’t play myself.” she said. “We shot my part in one day, and that is all I am going to say.”

Luckily, the “Nine” star is chattier about her longtime “Sex and the City” love. “I’ve seen every single episode so many times,” she gushes. “I really think Sarah Jessica Parker is one of the greatest actresses out there. She’s so funny! I loved spending that day with her.”

Spidey Returns!

Next year, Sam Raimi will be on top again! He’s directing “Spiderman 4” in 2010 for a 2011 release, which will follow “The Evil Dead” (his “Evil Dead” reboot) scheduled for release next year. Add his helming of sword-slashing epic “Warcraft” and it’s clear that people are soon to forgive him for the sins he committed on “Spider-man 3”. Redemption is possible they say.

The Black Widow

Iron Man 2: Scarlett Johansson is Natasha Romanoff, aka the Black Widow. On May 7, 2010 she will add a kick-ass superheroine to her repertoire when she appears as the sexy, leather-clad Black Widow in “Iron Man 2”. Johansson says that she, “bench-pressed crew members for the role” and hopes audiences (and fanboys) connect with it enough to warrant a “Black Widow” spin-off and a place in 2012’s “The Avengers”.

Who would say no to her when she can kill you with one hand? Who wouldn’t want to make us forget all about “The Spirit”? Who doesn’t think she’ll also turn up in another Woody Allen film? This is the year she could make the future her own.

Anne Hathaway Returns

We’re still spitting blood at Hathaway being robbed of a much deserved Oscar for “Rachel Getting Married,” so it’s rather reassuring that in early 2010 she’s decided to not bother the Academy one bit, choosing instead to appear in big hitters such as “Alice In Wonderland,” (by Jim Burton, she plays The White Queen) and “Valentine’s Day” (by Garry Marshall a romantic comedy that really needs no explanation, out on the 14^th of February.)

Later in the year though there’s Ed Zwick’s, “Love And Other Drugs” a movie all about Viagra, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal. If the director can calm down on the pretentiousness, it could be Oscar-baiting gold…

Wolfman!

“The Wolfman” has been delayed and delayed but it finally gets a February 12, 2010 release and the suits unveil the trailer on the same day as the “Avatar” promo.

The trailer looks very positive with a good story premise and a hairy Benicio Del Toro. This is a remake of a 1941 classic. “A beast has come among us,” growls the voiceover and soon, it will be among us too.

Brit’s Gemma Arterton

Gemma Arterton is the ruling queen of British cinema and conquering Hollywood seems to be Arterton’s goal in 2010. Her two Tinseltown mega-blockbusters are “Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time” and “Clash of the Titans” both could become franchises. She’s also starring in a St. Trinian’s sequel, a Stephen Frears comedy and a new “Withering Heights” adaptation.

We’d say don’t miss her. But you couldn’t even if you tried!
