James Cameron has only himself to beat now.
Just three weeks into release, the director’s sci-fi epic ‘Avatar’ has become the second-highest grossing film worldwide of all time, giving Cameron the top two spots on the list.
‘Avatar’ has earned over $1 billion, worldwide.
On Wednesday, ‘Avatar’ upped its global tally to $1.13 billion to surpass the $1.12 billion haul of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’, according to Box Office Mojo.
Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ still holds the all-time record with $1.84 billion, accrued in 1997 and 1998.
On the domestic front, ‘Avatar’ is projected to pass ‘Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’ this weekend as the 10th highest-grossing film in U.S. box office history. ‘Avatar’ is currently in 12th place with $374 million, behind ‘Return of the King’ ($377 million) and ‘Sith’ ($380 million).
How long will it take ‘Avatar’ to topple ‘Titanic’?
