Keith Urban’s “Til Summer Comes Around”

Keith Urban’s “Til Summer Comes Around”

The simmering centerpiece of Keith’s “Defying Gravity” album has been a favorite since the album’s release, so much so, that the Keith-focused Urban Country Blog site started a petition to demand its release as a summer-time single.

The season has already come and gone, but now “Til Summer Comes Around” is indeed a single. It’s actually appropriate timing given that the song is really set in the winter, as the protagonist pines for his long-lost summer love to return someday.

Penned by Keith with longtime collaborator Monty Powell, “Summer” is a stunning piece of songwriting. Given Keith’s occasional lyrical blandness, the words paint a vivid picture of a setting that perfectly mirrors the narrator’s emotional state: an abandoned theme park, chilled by the winter wind and haunted by past happiness.

The melancholy music further fills out the mood, complete with seaside carnival sound effects. The result is Keith’s finest single since 2007’s similarly emotional :Stupid Boy,” and one of his best to date.
