“Broken Embraces”

“Broken Embraces”

Two years ago, Pedro Almodovar was suffering from migraine headaches so intense that they required him to spend most of his days lying in bed in darkness. During that time, he began to tell himself stories about a blind director (a character he now considers his most immediate alter-ego.)

As time went by, however, the character began to resemble Almodovar less and took on a life of his own. Initially, Almodovar had no intention of tying the character to a film, despite the notes he kept.

But in the course of writing these notes, he realized he’d begun to also write a script. “It was quite a discovery.” Almodovar remembers, “to find that even through so much pain, the imagination stays intact.” As with all stories there is more than one moment of inspiration.

The next element of the script to surface was a photograph Almodovar took many years ago of the beach. More than just a pretty picture, he became obsessed with a nondescript couple that he accidentally captured on film . He felt there was a story to this couple and tried to include it in several of his previous films without success.

Finally Almodovar found use for the image in “Broken Embraces” by having one of the characters invent a mythology for the pictured couple, which she then interrelates to her own relationship.

“Broken Embraces” tells the story of a blind writer named Harry Caine (Luis Homar), who used to be a director named Mateo Blanco and loved a woman named Lena (Penelope Cruz). One day, Caine is visited by a young film-maker who wants to collaborate on a script, which causes Caine’s buried past to come rushing back to him.

“This just goes to show that even in moments when pain paralyzes you, your imagination can save you.”
