Rod Stewart put out five albums from 2002 and 2006 and after taking a relative eternity to craft his latest set of hit-tune covers, you wonder if he should have taken a little bit more time!
Though he’s fine and satisfyingly scratchy voice throughout, Stewart rarely brings anything new to these indelible R&B gems, especially when he duets with the original artists, as in a too-faithful rendition of “Tracks of My Tears” with Smokey Robinson.
For a sample you can download, “Let it Be Me.”
There’s no doubting the love in that old heart of his, but “Soulbook” could’ve taken more time to do and have cut much deeper.
