“I can’t let Marie top me,” says Donny Osmond of why he decided to hit the dance floor for this season of “Dancing With the Stars,” in the wake of his hot-stepping younger sister. “It’s been eating at me for two years!” he added.
Paired with “Dancing With the Stars,” vet Kym Johnson, the perennial song-and-dance man is showing early signs that he may be the one to bet, in this year’s competition.
“People have said that I have an advantage, but ballroom dancing is totally different from my style,” he says. “In regular dancing, the shoulders can be rounded and it’s more streetwise. But in ballroom, the posture is vitally important, if not the main thing.” he added.
Another potential challenge afoot: he’s pulling double duty during “Dancing With the Stars,” by performing four nights a week alongside his sister at the Flamingo in Las Vegas. To make sure he squeezes in enough practice time, Johnson has been coming along for the ride, racking up frequent-flier miles. “We are practicing everywhere,” says Osmond. “She’s traveling with me. Every waking moment, I’m dancing. It’s crazy!”
“Not to mention crazy frustrating at times: Kim will choreograph a routine, then we’ll look at it, and she’ll say, “We need to change something,” says Osmond. “You create the muscle memory for something and then you have to erase it and start with something new.”
“I am working my tail off!” says, Osmond. “But well worth it.”
So, should we expect to see Osmond do a reprise of Marie’s famous 2007 fainting spell? Don’t count on it. “I know how to breathe. She just holds her breath.” he says with a mischievous laugh. “She always did that as little kid, hold her breath and cry.” he said. “Oh, brother…” he added with a smile, “What baby!”
