Chastity Bono – the 40-year-old daughter of the ‘Believe’ singer and her late husband Sonny – began the lengthy gender reassignment process earlier this year.
She has asked family and friends to call her Chaz, and will have surgery to give her male genitals later this year.
Her spokesman said: “Chaz has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity. He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by loved ones.
“It is Chaz’s hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue.”
Chastity, a writer and reality TV star, came out as a lesbian 20 years ago, when she was just 18 years old.
Since then, she has been a passionate advocate for gay, lesbian and transgender rights.
Cher reportedly cut all ties with her daughter when she revealed her sexuality, saying in a statement at the time: “I’d always had this idea that she would get married and have a family.”
They later reconciled and Chastity recently said: “My mother is thrilled that I’m losing weight and getting healthier, but as for her being more proud of me, I don’t think there’s anything work wise I could do that would make that happen because she is already proud of me.
“What mom cares about most is that I’m happy, healthy and enjoying my life.”

Your opening paragraph is one of the most retarded things I’ve ever read. Weird and twisted? You realize that the sensation that your sex is wrong is actually a diagnosable disorder, don’t you? In other countries, you’re even legally allowed to change your sex on your birth certificate once you’ve been diagnosed.
