George Clooney appointed U.N. messenger of peace

George ClooneyHollywood hunk George Clooney has been apointed U.N. Messenger of Peace by the Organization’s chief, Ban Ki-moon- who recognized the actor’s tireless efforts to focus public attention on key international political and social issues, according to UN spokeswoman Michele Montas.The 46 year-old star will join eight other internationally renowned individuals chosen to campaign for the UN drive to improve the lives of billions of people around the world. “I am deeply honored to receive this appointment,” Clooney said. “I look forward to working with the United Nations in order to build public support for its critically important work in some of the most difficult, dangerous and dire places in the world.” The eight other Messengers of Peace are actor Michael Douglas, Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, primate expert Jane Goodall, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim, Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, Japanese-American violinist Midori Goto, and Olympic equestrian competitor Princess Haya of Jordan. Clooney will visit UN headquarters on Jan. 31 to receive his designation and attend a meeting of countries that contribute troops to the 17 UN peacekeeping missions in countries from the Mideast and Africa to Haiti, Afghanistan and East Timor.
