French president Nicolas Sarkozy is spending Christmas abroad with model-turned-singer Carla Bruni. The two lovebirds have jetted off to Egypt for the festive break. They will spend the next few days in Luxor before Sarkozy’s official meeting with President Mubarak this coming weekend. “It’s a bit shocking because he’s only just split up with his wife,” said one French tourist.[Sarkozy and his second wife Cecilia split amicably in October after 11 years of marriage] “Well if he’s happy and she’s happy and they’re not just doing it for the publicity” was another woman’s reaction. With heavy security surrounding them, Sarkozy and Bruni swept into the Old Winter Palace hotel for a little R&R before the president was to meet with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. The couple will be visiting the Luxor and Karnak temples as well as the Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheik. According to French media, Sarkozy borrowed a private plane from French billionaire Vincent Bollore for the trip. The French president’s department has declined to comment on Sarkozy’s trip to Luxor, saying it is a personal affair.
