World Music Awards 2007: Winners

Stars of the music industry have descended upon Monte Carlo for the 2007 World Music Awards, held on Sunday night. Canadian singer Celine Dion and R&B queen Patti LaBelle were honoured for their outstanding careers while Akon, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna, Ciara, Mexican rock band Mana and Egyptian singer Amr Diab took the stage. Dion received the “Legend Award” and dedicated it to her family. “Every time I go on stage, it’s all of them going on stage with me,” she said in her acceptance speech which was in both English and French. She also performed Taking Chances, the first single from her forthcoming album Taking Chances, which is due later this month. Pop sensation Rihanna was named entertainer of the year, as well as best-selling pop female artist. She performed her hit single “Umbrella” for the audience. Akon picked up three awards for best-selling R&B male artist, best-selling African Artist, and best-selling Internet artist. “You are the witnesses to seeing me receive any kind of award for music for the first time in my life,” he told the audience. Canada’s Avril Lavigne received awards for best-selling pop/rock female artist and best-selling Canadian artist, while British star Mika went home with best-selling new artist, best-selling male entertainer, best-selling pop/rock artist and best-selling British artist awards. Also taking the stage and receiving awards were Mexican rock band Mana for best-selling Latin group, Cascada for best-selling German artist, and Laura Pausini for best-selling Italian artist.
